Fiddle and Violin Compared

By Elan Chalford

When people ask me what is the difference between a violin and a fiddle, I have a simple, straight forward answer. As soon as they hear it they say, "I thought so."

I guess most people are aware that the instrument is the same. Even Itzhak Perlman refers to his Strad as a fiddle. Of course, his style of playing is virtuoso violin!

Most fiddlers prefer using the best violin they can get their hands on. Even if they play no violin music, they like a good violin to play.

There are still two more points on this question of comparing the violin and the fiddle.

1. There are "mountain fiddles" that are made by amateur craftsman. They are usually a little irregular in construction. Some of them sound quite good!

2. A fiddle does not need to have the bridge "flattened." A normal bridge works fine for any fiddle style, just as it does for violin music.

Next time you see a fiddler, if his fiddle looks like a fine violin, maybe it is!

"Violinist on the Roof" just doesn't sound right.

I've played the show "Fiddler on the Roof" many times. In one production I also did the onstage parts while playing the violin.

The violin is such an awesome and versatile instrument. From symphony orchestras to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" to the electric violins used in Riverdance. And on and on.

As Tom Hanks said in "The Man with One Red Shoe": "Stand tall. You're in the string section."

One of my sons played violin in the orchestra in High school. He still plays. I just called him to suggest he check out fiddleguru.com. He said he would when he got back from fishing. He lives in Florida now. I was thinking that you might enjoy The 950 dollar violin.

Thank you for sharing, Elan. I am a lover of Country Music, so I enjoy the fiddle. However, a nice sunny afternoon on the lawn, listening to a string Quartet is very relaxing and enjoyable.
Best wishes.
